Introduction to System
SingleZoneDuctlessSplitSystemHeatPumpsfeatureawall
mountedindoorfan/evaporatorunitthatreceivesrefrigerant
fromaninverterdrivenvariablespeedoutdoorcondensing
unit.Thesystemoperationiscontrolledwitharemote
control.
Theoutdoorunitfeaturesavariablespeedrotary
compressor,EEVmeteringdeviceandDCfanmotor.These
systemsuseR410ArefrigerantandPVEoil.Theoutdoorunits
are208/230voltratedsystems.Theycomefactorycharged
forupto25ft.ofinterconnectingpiping.
Theindoorunitsarewallmountedtype.TheyfeatureaDC
blowermotorandaDClouvermotor.Theunithasaroom
temperaturesensorandanevaporatortubetemperature
sensor.Thewallunitispoweredbyvoltagefromtheoutdoor
unit.
Specificationsforproperoperationshouldbefollowed
•Thesystemsaredesignedtooperateintemperature
rangesof60°Fto86°Fincoolingmodeand60°Fto86°Fin
heat mode.
•PVEoilisnonreactivetowaterandwillnotgointo
Hydrolysis.Thereisnoneedtoaddarefrigerationdrier
whenservicingorinstallingthissystem.
•Theindoorwallmountedunitreceivesoperatingvoltage
andcommunicationdatasignalson#14AWGwirethat
connectsbetweentheindoorandoutdoorunits.There
shouldnotbeanysplicesinthefieldwiringthatgoes
betweenterminals1,2,3and4.Aspliceinthesewiresmay
causethesystemtolosecommunicationbetweenthe
indoorandoutdoorunits.Thesystemwillthendisplayan
errorcodeE7.
•Thesystemscomewithenoughfactorychargeforupto
25feetofconnectingrefrigerationtubing.Thetubing
connectsusingflaretypefittingsatboththeindoorand
outdoorunits.Tubingmustbesizedperthespecifications.
Bothlinesmustbeinsulated.Theonlymethodofchecking
chargeoradjustingchargeisbyweightmethodexplainedin
thismanual.(Noexceptions.)
•Thecondensatesystemisagravitytype.Afieldinstalled
condensatepumpmaybeaddedtothesystem.Always
followthemanufacturer’sinstallationinstructionswhen
installingacondensatepump.
•Properclearancesatbothindoorandoutdoorunitsmustbe
maintained.Improperclearancescausesystemconditions
thatincludehighrefrigerantpressure,lowrefrigerant
pressureandindoorcoilfreezingproblems.
FundamentalTheoryOfHowSystemWorks
Theindoorunitwillsenseroomtemperatureatthepoint
wherethewallunitisinstalled.Theindoorfanwillrun
continuouslywhenplacedinheatingorcoolingmode
operationandwillnotcycleonandoffwiththeoutdoor
unit.Ifitdid,roomtemperaturecouldnotbesensedor

maintained.
Theinvertercompressorsystemintheoutdoorunitwillvary
therefrigerantflowandindoorairvolumelevelstomatch
thecoolingrequirementinsidetheconditionedspace.Ifan
abnormalconditionisdetectedbythesystem’ssensors,the
systemhastheabilitytotakereactivemeasures.
Theamountofrefrigerantflowandassociatedcapacity
generatedbythesystemwillbedeterminedbyhowfastthe
system’svariablespeedrotarycompressorispumping.The
compressoroperatingspeedrequirementisdeterminedby
thedifferencebetweentheconditionedspacetemperature
versusthesetpointestablishedbythehomeowner’sremote
control.
Ifalargeamountofcapacityisneeded,thecompressorwill
operateatahighfrequencyspeed.Astheneedforcapacity
reducesandthetemperatureoftheroomnearssetpoint,
thecompressorwillslowdown.Whensetpointhasbeen
reached,thecompressorwillshutoffbuttheindoorfan
willcontinuetooperate.Onceadifferenceintemperature
issensedbetweenremotecontrolsetpointtemperature
androomtemperature,thecompressorwillrestartatanew
calculatedspeed.
Ifasystemsensordeterminesthereisaneedtoadjust
thefrequencysignaltopreventasystemmalfunction,
thecompressorfrequencymaybeoverriddenandanew
frequencyestablished.Itshouldbenotedthatthefrequency
signallevelthatissenttothecompressorcannotbe
determinedbyaservicingtechnician.

functionsanddiagnosticprocedureswillbeexplainedin
greater detail.
