DC CONNECTION PRECAUTIONS
6.1 Allswitchesshouldbesetin
OFF(O)positionandtheACcordshouldbe
disconnectedfromtheelectricaloutletbeforeyouconnectanddisconnect
thechargerclamps.Neverallowtheclampstotoucheachother.
6.2 Whenattachingthechargerclamps,becertaintomakethebestpossible
mechanicalaswellaselectricalconnection.Thiswilltendtopreventthe
clampsfromslippingoffconnections,avoiddangeroussparking,andas-
sure safer and more efficient charging. Keep the clamps clean.
CAUTION:SETTING SWITCHES TO OFF (O) DOES NOT ALWAYS
DISCONNECT THE CHARGER ELECTRICAL CIRCUIT FROM THE AC
POWER CORD OR DC CHARGER CLAMPS.

BATTERY IN VEHICLE OR CONNECTION TO ENGINE
7.1 Before working on the vehicle, firmly apply the emergency brake and place
thegearshiftto
NEUTRAL. ShiftanautomatictransmissiontoPARK.
7.2 Locatethechargerasfarawayfromthebatteryasthechargercordsper-
mit,andpositiontheACandDCcordstoavoidsteppingonortrippingover
themandtopreventdamagebyhood,doors,ormovingengineparts.
7.3 Stayclearoffanblades,belts,pulleys,andanyotherpartsthatcancause
physical injury.
7.4 Turn OFF all vehicle loads, including door lights, and correct any defects in
vehicle’selectricalsystemthatmayhavecausedlowbattery.
7.5 Checkthepolarityofbatteryposts.The
POSITIVE (POS., P, +)postusu-
allyhaslargerdiameterthan
NEGATIVE (NEG., N,–)post.
7.6 Determinewhichpostofthebatteryisgrounded(connected)tothechas-
sis.Ifthenegativepostisgrounded(asinmostvehicles),seeparagraph
7.7.Ifthepositivepostisgrounded,seeparagraph7.8.
7.7 For a negative-grounded vehicle, first connect the
POSITIVE (red)clamp
fromthechargertothe
POSITIVE (POS., P, +)ungroundedpostofbattery.
Thenconnectthe
NEGATIVE (BLACK) clamptovehiclechassisorengine
blockawayfrombattery.Donotconnecttheclamptothecarburetor,fuel
lines,orsheet-metalbodyparts.Connecttoaheavy-gaugemetalpartof
theframeorengineblock.Whendisconnectingthecharger,turntheswitch
to
OFF (O),disconnecttheACcord,removetheclampfromthevehicle
chassis,andthenremovetheclampfromthebatteryterminal.
7.8 For a positive-grounded vehicle, connect the
NEGATIVE (BLACK)clamp
fromthechargertothe
NEGATIVE (NEG., N, –)ungroundedpostofthe
battery.Thenconnectthe
POSITIVE (RED)clamptothevehiclechassis
orengineblockawayfromthebattery.Donotconnecttheclamptothe
carburetor,fuellines,orsheet-metalbodyparts.Connecttoaheavy-gauge
metalpartoftheframeorengineblock.
