D. Gybing
Gybing with genaker are far easier than once with traditional spinnaker and resemble
tacking a bit.
Gybes are done best when boat travels at her maximum speed, so the pressure on
the sails is smallest. Therefore you should gybe from reach to reach.
When gybe begins crew should fully ease genaker and start sheeting on the other
side. Genaker sheet is quite long so sheet in fast. The helmsman should gybe the
main at the same time.
In heavy wind right after gybing the main both crew members should jump to the
other side to hike. Next step is to gybe the jib.
In light air don’t forget to have a bit tension in gnav, which will help you to flip the
battens.
E. Capsizing
Capsizes happen even to best sailors therefore those should be also a part of your
training.
After capsizing Lower your gennaker (if it was up).
Capsize 90 degrees
The key to right your boat is to jump on
the daggerboard. If you havn’t felt overboard
just go there. To right the boat it needs just one person on the daggerboard. The
second person can just sit onboard or help.
If you have felt overboard wait until the boat is fully capsized
– it is easier to enter the
daggerboard then.
Capsize 180 degrees
Get yourself on the bottom of the boat, stand on the edge of the boat, grab
daggerboard and pull. You can also fish out the main sheet and pull it. When the
boat starts to righted jump on the daggerboard. And proceed as if it would be
capsized 90 degrees.
12. After sailing
a. Drop the SAILS. Leaving the boat with sails up can cause it falling over.
b. Check if ther is no water inside the boat. Open the back hatch and bunge. Heel the boat
to the stern. There are number fo reasons the water can find its way to inside of the
boat. One of those can be improperly closed hatch or used up sealing. Afterwards leave
the bunge open
– it allows the hull to be ventilated and temperatures to be equaled.
