Appendix A
Home Network System Administrator
HomeClick Network Center does almost everything that a sys-
tem administrator will do for your network. When you set up
HomeClick Network Center with the Network Setup Wizard,
printers were shared to the network, file sharing permissions
were set, and all necessary adapters, protocols, and clients
were installed.
However, the situation may arise that your Windows network
settings are not configured correctly, and the HomeClick Self
Test may be unable to fix the problem. When this arises, you can
use the Windows Network troubleshooters to help with your
network problems.
To open the Windows Network Troubleshooter
1. On the Windows taskbar, click Start, and then click Help.
2. In Windows Help, click Troubleshooting.
3. If your computer is using Windows 98, click Windows 98
Troubleshooters.
-or-
If your computer is using Windows 95, click Troubleshooting.
4. If your computer is using Windows 98, click Networking.
-or-
If your computer is using Windows 95, click If you have a
problem using the network.
You may find the following information useful when using the
Windows Network troubleshooter.
Type of Network There are several types of networks avail-
able. Your home network is a "Microsoft Network."
The Add New Hardware Wizard The HomeClick Network
Setup Wizard automatically runs the Add New Hardware Wizard.
At the end of HomeClick Setup, if you received the message
"This computer is now a part of your home network," your net-
work hardware was detected correctly.
Workgroup name The Workgroup Name is known as the Net-
work Name in HomeClick Network Center. Every computer on
your network should use the same network name. In HomeClick
Network Center, click Network Status, and look for Network
Name.
Network clients Your home network uses Client for Microsoft
Networks.
Network Adapter Your home network uses one network
adapter to "talk" to the other computers on the network. If you
are using the HomeConnect network adapter, look for a network
adapter with "HomeConnect" in the name.
HomeClick installs two network protocols:
TCP/IP TCP/IP is automatically "bound" to every network
adapter and dial-up adapter you have installed.
IPX/SPX IPX/SPX is automatically "bound" to the network
adapter used for your home network. If you are using the
HomeConnect network adapter, IPX/SPX is bound to that net-
work apdapter.
Log on to Windows NT Domain This check box should be
clear. Your home network is a peer-to-peer network, which
doesn't require a network domain.
Appendix B
Security for High-Speed Internet Connections
When you first run the Network Setup Wizard your printers are
automatically shared so they are available to your home net-
work. You are also given the option to share drives and folders
so they are available to the network. When you are using the
Internet through a modem or high-speed Internet connection, it
may be possible for computers on the Internet to access the
shared printers, drives, and folders on your home network.
To prevent computers on the Internet from accessing the shared
files and printers on your home computers, HomeClick auto-
matically disables File and Printer sharing on all dial-up connec-
tions, such as those you use with a modem to connect to the
Internet.
If you have a high-speed Internet connection, such as ADSL or
cable modem, and you are using one network adapter and hub
for both your Internet connection and your home network con-
nection, HomeClick cannot disable File and Printer sharing on
the Internet connection. This means that the computers on the
Internet have access to shared files and printers on the comput-
ers on your network.
To make your home network more secure, use two network
adapters on one of the computers on your network. Use one
network adapter for your home network and use the other for
your high-speed Internet connection. Then, use Internet Connec-
tion Sharing to share the Internet connection with the other
computers on your home network. HomeClick can then disable
File and Printer Sharing on the network adapter that is used for
the Internet connection, which prevents shared resources from
being accessible from computers on the Internet.
For more information about creating a secure home network,
while using a high-speed Internet connection, contact your
Internet Service Provider.
Note
When using Internet
Connection Sharing, the
Connection Sharing Com-
puter must be on to make
the Internet connection
available to the other
computers on the net-
work.
