1. INITIAL PREPARATION.
A.)Make sure the solvent cement you are planning to use
isdesignedforthespecificapplicationyouareattempting.
B.)Knowthephysicalandchemicalcharacteristicsandlimitationsofthe
PVCandCPVCpipingmaterialsthatyouareabouttouse.
C.)Knowthereputationofyourmanufacturerandtheirproducts.
D.)Knowyourownqualificationsorthoseofyourcontractor.Thesolvent
weldingtechniqueofjoiningPVCandCPVCpipeisaspecializedskill
justasanyotherpipefittingtechnique.
E.)Closelysupervisetheinstallationandinspectthefinishedjobbefore
start-up.
F.) Contactthemanufacturer,supplier,orcompetentconsulting
agency if you have any questions about the application or
installationofPVCandCPVCpipe.
G.) Takethetimeandefforttodoaprofessionaljob.Shortcutswillonly
causeyouproblemsanddelaysinstart-up.Byfar,themajorityof
failuresinPVCandCPVCsystemsaretheresultofshortcutsand/or
improperjoiningtechniques.
2. SELECTION OF MATERIALS.

DeburringTool,Knife,File,orBevelingMachine(2”andabove).

Brush - Pure Bristle.
•
Rag-Cotton(NotSynthetic).
•
PrimerandCleaner.
•
SolventCement-PVCforPVCComponentsandCPVCforCPVC
Components.
•
Containers-MetalorGlasstoholdPrimerandCement.Selectthe
typeofPVCorCPVCmaterialstobeusedonthebasisoftheir
application with respect to chemical resistance, pressure rating,
temperaturecharacteristics,etc.
•
InsertionTool-Helpfulforlargerdiameterpipeandfittings6inches
(15.2cm)andabove.
prIMer
ItisrecommendedthatTetrahydrofuran(THF)beusedtopreparethe
surfacesofpipeandfittingsforsolventwelding.Donotusewater,
rags,gasolineoranyothersubstitutesforcleaningPVCorCPVC
surfaces.AchemicalcleanersuchasMEKmaybeused.

The cement should be a bodied cement of approximately 500 to
1600centipoiseviscositycontaining10-20%(byweight)virginPVC
material solvated with tetrahydrofuran (THF). Small quantities of
dimethyl formamide (DMF) may be included to act as a retarding
agenttoextendcuringtime.Selectthepropercement;Schedule40
cementshouldbeusedforSchedule40pipe.Neveruseall-purpose
cements,commercialgluesandadhesivesorABScementtojoinPVC
orCPVCpipeandfittings.

Selectasuitablepurebristletypepaintbrush.Useaproperwidthbrush
orrollertoapplytheprimerandcement(seechartbelow).Speedy
applicationofcementisimportantduetoitsfastdryingcharacteristics.
IMPORTANTNOTE:Adaubertypeapplicatorshouldonlybeused
onpipesizes2”andbelow.Forlargerdiameterpipe,abrushorroller
mustbeused.

3. MAKING THE JOINT.
A.)Cutting Pipe must be squarely cut to allow for the proper
interfacingofthepipeendandthefittingsocketbottom.This
canbeaccomplishedwithamiterboxsaworwheeltypecutter
Wheeltypecuttersarenotgenerallyrecommendedforlarger
diameterssincetheytendtoflarethecornerofthepipeend.If
this type of cutter is used, the flare on the end must be
completelyremoved.
NOTE:Powersawsshouldbespecificallydesignedtocutplasticpipe.
