Following these steps will erase everything from the
4big, including encrypted data. If you have information that you
wanttoprotectorcontinuetouse,backupthisinformationbefore
performingthesesteps.
IMPORTANT NOTE:
Formattingwillnoterasetheencryptioncon-
figuration.Ifyouwishtoformata4bigthathasbeenencrypted,you
willfirstneedtounlockthedeviceusingtheLaCieDesktopMan-
ager,thenfollowthestepsbelow.
3.4.2. Windows Users
TheprocessofformattingadriveonacomputerrunningWindows
XPorWindowsVistaconsistsoftwosteps:(1)installingasignature
on the drive, and (2) formatting the drive. These steps will erase
anythingthatisonthedisk.
TECHNICAL NOTE:
WindowsXP32-bit:Theseoperatingsystemswillnotrecognizevol-
umesgreaterthan2TBinsize.
WindowsXPx64,WindowsVista(32-and64-bitversions),andWin-
dows7(32-and64-bitversions):Theseoperatingsystemswillrecog-
nizevolumesgreaterthan2TBinsize,butthedisksmustbeconverted
totheGPTfilesystembeforepartitionsgreaterthan2TBcanbecre-
ated.
1. Connectthedrivetothepowersourceandtothecomputervia
theinterfaceport.
2. Right-clickMy ComputerandselectManage.
3. Fromthe“ComputerManagement”window,selectDisk Man-
agement (located below the Storage group). See
Fig. 17
(screensmaydifferslightlydependingonthesystem).
4. If the “Initialize and Convert Disk Wizard” window appears,
clickCancel.
5. WindowswilllisttheHardDisksthatareinstalledonthesystem.
Locatethedrivethatisrepresentedbythe
icon.Right-click
theiconandselectInitialize.
6. WindowsXPx64,WindowsVista,andWindows7usersonly:
Right-clickthediskandclickConvert to GPT.
7. In the box to the right that says Unallocated, right-click and
selectNew Partition…
8. Onthefirstpageofthe“NewPartitionWizard,”clickNext.See
Fig. 18
