HOW THE RADAR AND LASER WORK-GENERAL
A. HOW THE RADAR WORKS
The actual process involved in determining a
vehicle’sspeedisbasicallyasimpleone.Itinvolves
directing a beam of microwave energy at an
approachingtargetvehicle.Aportionofthisbeam
is reflected by the target and is received by the
radar unit that originally transmitted the signal.
Thereflectedsignalisshiftedinfrequencybyan
amount proportional to the speed of the target
vehicle.ThisphenomenonisknownastheDoppler
effect.Theradarunitdeterminesthetargetvehicle
speed from the difference in frequency between
thereflectedsignalandoriginalsignal.
