1 Overview
Figure 1: S3116 Storage Server
Congratulations on your purchase of a Rackable Systems S3116-NAS server (figure 1). Ideal for primary
and secondary Network Attached Storage (NAS) applications, the S3116-NAS server provides leading
software features, high availability, high performance, and was designed for easy, rapid deployment.
This document provides a quick set of instructions to rapidly get going with a newly acquired Rackable
Systems NAS appliance.
2 Hardware Setup
Start by performing the following initial S3116 server installation tasks:
• Attach the rails to the rack and then install the server in the rack.
• Unpack and insert the drives into the server in the following order:
• Connect power to the three power supplies in the back
• Connect a keyboard and monitor to the server to monitor initial bring-up
3 NAS Software Setup
The first step in configuring the NAS Appliance for your data center environment is to boot up the server,
reconfigure the RAID if necessary, and configure the IP address:
• Connect a separate system (such as a laptop) to the right-most Ethernet port on the back of the
server. Set the IP address of your system to 10.10.0.10, netmask 255.255.255.0.
• Turn on server power (recessed button on front).
• [Optional] Unless a previous RAID configuration was agreed on, the S3116-NAS Appliance ships
with two 8-port SATA RAID arrays, configured for RAID 5 with one hot spare per array. This
maximizes usable drive capacity while maximizing availability. If you would like to change the
RAID settings, press alt-3 during the boot process to reconfigure the RAID. Rackable Systems
strongly recommends keeping at least one hot spare drive per array in RAID 5 configurations.
• Allow it to boot up. If it boots successfully, the last couple of lines in the boot up process give the
IP address you need to connect to in your laptop's web browser to configure the NAS software:
