Internal Disk
Internal Disk, an optional feature, efficiently uses cen-
tral electronic complex (CEC) resources such as
memory, power and the service element to provide stor-
age without the additional hardware normally contained
in a separate unit. By reducing the number of channels
needed to attach to external storage controllers, the
Internal Disk feature reduces initial purchase cost. The
small 3.5 inch form factor of the 18.2 GB Hard Disk
Drives (HDD) allows 16 disks to be packaged in a
Multiprise 3000 Base Frame (in case of Expansion
Frame, the maximum is 20). This will give customers
large space savings over older generations of DASD.
The Internal Disk environmentals are outstanding. Cus-
tomers may see up to a 95%
improvement in energy
and IBM maintenance costs over older storage control-
ler/array configurations.
Internal Disk performs exceptionally well when com-
pared to older, non-cached DASD. The read capability
will be similar to or better than most current products.
Customers can use Internal Disk to consolidate many
external DASD units into one. Through RAID-5, Internal
Disk helps provide the availability needed for 24 x 365
operations. It is a cost-effective offering since the Sys-
tems Assist Processor (SAP) performs the control unit
function, eliminating the need for a costly separate
control unit.
The Internal Disk entry configuration of 72 GB (SSA
RAID-5 Protected/effective capacity) is upgradable in 72
or 108 GB increments to 792 GB (SSA RAID-5 Protected).
Internal Disk logical volumes can be shared between
LPARs. Internal Disk supports 3380-J, E, K and 3390-1, 2,
3, 9 logical volume mappings. Internal Disk supports ESA
mode for z/VM, VM/ESA, VSE/ESA™, z/OS™ and OS/390
®
.
Internal Battery Feature
The Internal Battery Feature (IBF), an optional feature,
provides the function of a local uninterruptible power
source to ride through power outages for the CEC and
Internal Disk. This feature further enhances the robust-
ness of IBM's CMOS power design, increasing Power
Line Disturbance (PLD) immunity.
The IBF enables from 10 to 30
minutes of full power ca-
pability for the S/390 Multiprise 3000. With the installa-
tion of an IBF, there is no additional floor space required
on the raised floor or in facilities areas. The IBF may
eliminate the floor space required for an external
Uninterrupible Power Supply. Each IBF is fully redundant
and complements the N+1 front-end power technology.
The IBF design is consistent with IBM's CMOS server
power technology and has no energy conversion such
as those experienced with a conventional independent
Uninterrupible Power Supply supporting a server. The
IBF has self-testing capability and is fully integrated into
the diagnostics, including use of the Remote Service
Facility (RSF) support.
