Chimney Fires
The result of excessive creosote buildup is a chimney fire. Chimney fires are dangerous. Chimney inside temperatures can
exceed 1100°C. This causes much higher than normal temperatures in the chimney and on its exterior surfaces. Thus
ignition of nearby or touching combustible material is more likely during a chimney fire. Proper clearances are critical
during such a fire.
Chimney fires are easy to detect; they usually involve one or more of the following:
•
Flames and sparks shooting out of the top of the chimney.
•
A roaring sound and/or a Vibration of the chimney.
In the Event of a Chimney Fire
1. If the chimney is thoroughly and regularly swept, chimney fires should not occur. However, if a chimney fire does
occur turn off the stove immediately and isolate the mains electricity supply (if applicable), and tightly close the
doors of the stove. This should cause the chimney fire to go out. I
2. f the chimney fire does not go out when the above action is taken then the fire brigade should be called immediately.
Prepare to evacuate to ensure everyone's safety. Have a well understood plan of action for evacuation. Have a place
outside where everyone is to meet.
3. Do not relight the stove until the chimney and flueway have been cleaned and examined by a professional. Close air
inlet on stove. Also check combustibles around the chimney and the roof.
Avoiding a Chimney Fire
There are two ways to avoid chimney fires:
1) Chimney cleaning
The chimney should be swept at least twice a year. It is important that the flue connection and chimney are swept prior
to lighting up after a prolonged shutdown period.
If the stove is fitted in place of an open fire then the chimney will require sweeping after a month of continuous opera-
tion. This is a precaution to ensure that any “softer” deposits left from the open fire usage have not been loosened by the
higher flue temperatures generated by the closed stove. In situations where it is not possible to sweep through the stove
the installer will have provided alternative means, such as a soot door. After sweeping the chimney the stove flue outlet
and the flue pipe connecting the stove to the chimney must be cleaned with a flue brush.
2) Operation
Do not have fires in the stove that may lead to, or ignite chimney fires.
DO NOT burn wet wood the excessive moisture
and lower chimney temperatures can greatly increase creosote.
DO NOT burn excessively hot flash fires, such as when
burning household trash, cardboard, Christmas tree limbs,
NOTE: SMOKE AND CARBON MONOXIDE DETECTORS MUST BE INSTALLED AS PER REGULATION
CO Alarm
Your installer should have fitted a CO alarm in the same room as the appliance. If the alarm sounds unexpectedly, follow
the instructions given under “Warning Note” on next page.
