General Information on Batteries for
Powering Inverters
areconnectedinseriestoforma12V,200Ahbattery(String1).Similarly,two6V,200Ah
batteries,Batteries3and4areconnectedinseriestoforma12V,200Ahbattery
(String2).Thesetwo12V,200AhStrings1and2areconnectedinparalleltoforma
12V,400Ahbank.

When2ormorebatteries/batterystringsareconnectedinparallelandare
thenconnectedtoaninverterorcharger(Seefigs7.3and7.4givenabove),
attentionshouldbepaidtothemannerinwhichthecharger/inverteriscon-
nectedtothebatterybank.PleaseensurethatifthePositiveoutputcableof
thebatterycharger/inverter(Cable“A”)isconnectedtothePositivebattery
postofthefirstbattery(Battery1infig7.3)ortothePositivebatterypostof
thefirstbatterystring(Battery1ofString1infig.7.4),thentheNegativeout-
putcableofthebatterycharger/inverter(Cable“B”)shouldbeconnectedto
theNegativebatterypostofthelastbattery(Battery4asinfig.7.3)ortothe
NegativePostofthelastbatterystring(Battery4ofBatteryString2asin
fig.7.4).Thisconnectionensuresthefollowing:
- The resistances of the interconnecting cables will be balanced.
- Alltheindividualbatteries/batterystringswillseethesameseriesresistance.
- Alltheindividualbatterieswillcharge/dischargeatthesamecharging
currentandthus,willbechargedtothesamestateatthesametime.
- Noneofthebatterieswillseeanoverchargecondition.
Sizing the inverter Battery Bank
oneofthemostfrequentlyaskedquestionsis,"howlongwillthebatterieslast?"This
questioncannotbeansweredwithoutknowingthesizeofthebatterysystemandthe
loadontheinverter.Usuallythisquestionisturnedaroundtoask“Howlongdoyou
wantyourloadtorun?”,andthenspecificcalculationcanbedonetodeterminethe
properbatterybanksize.
There are a few basic formulae and estimation rules that are used:
1. ActivePowerinWatts(W)=VoltageinVolts(V)xCurrentinAmperes(A)
xPowerfactor
2. foraninverterrunningfroma12Vbatterysystem,theDCcurrentrequiredfrom
the12VbatteriesistheACpowerdeliveredbytheinvertertotheloadinWatts(W)
dividedby10&foraninverterrunningfroma24Vbatterysystem,theDCcurrent
requiredfromthe24VbatteriesistheACpowerdeliveredbytheinvertertothe
loadinWatts(W)dividedby20.
3. Energyrequiredfromthebattery=DCcurrenttobedelivered
(A)xtimeinHours(H).
