Range Test Your Radio
1.Beforeeachflyingsession,besuretorangecheck
yourradio.Thisisaccomplishedbyturningonyour
transmitterwiththeantennacollapsed.Turnonthe
receiverinyourairplane.Withyourairplaneonthe
groundandtheenginerunning,youshouldbeableto
walk30paces(approximately100feet)awayfromyour
airplaneandstillhavecompletecontrolofallfunctions.
Ifnot,don’tattempttofly!Haveyourradioequipment
checkedoutbythemanufacturer.
2.Double-checkthatallcontrols(aileron,elevator,rudder
andthrottle)moveinthecorrectdirection.
3.Besurethatyourtransmitterbatteriesarefully
charged,pertheinstructionsincludedwithyourradio.

Check Your Radio
Beforegoingtothefield,besurethatyourbatteriesarefully
chargedpertheinstructionsincludedwithyourradio.Charge
boththetransmitterandreceiverpackforyourairplane.Use
therecommendedchargersuppliedwithyourparticularradio
system,followingtheinstructionsprovidedwiththeradio.In
mostcases,theradioshouldbechargedthenightbeforegoing
outflying.
Beforeeachflyingsession,besuretorangecheckyourradio.
Seeyourradiomanualfortherecommendedrangeand
instructionsforyourradiosystem.Eachradiomanufacturer
specifiesdifferentproceduresfortheirradiosystems.Next,start
themotor.Withthemodelsecurelyanchored,checktherange
again.Therangetestshouldnotbesignificantlyaffected.Ifitis,
don’tattempttofly!Haveyourradioequipmentcheckedoutby
themanufacturer.
Note: Keep loose items that can get entangled in
the propeller away from the prop. These include
loose clothing, or other objects such as pencils and
screwdrivers. Especially keep your hands away from the
propeller.
Double-checkthatallcontrols(aileron,elevator,rudderand
throttle)moveinthecorrectdirection.
Checktheradioinstallationandmakesureallthecontrol
surfacesaremovingcorrectly(i.e.thecorrectdirectionandwith
therecommendedthrows).Testrunthemotorandmakesure
ittransitionssmoothlyfromofftofullthrottleandback.Also
ensuretheengineisinstalledaccordingtothemanufacturer’s
instructions,anditwilloperateconsistently.
Checkallthecontrolhorns,servohorns,andclevisestomake
suretheyaresecureandingoodcondition.Replaceanyitems
thatwouldbeconsideredquestionable.Failureofanyofthese
componentsinflightwouldmeanthelossofyouraircraft.
