Iwantyoutousethesametechniqueasbeforewhenchecking
forthethrust,onlythistimeonlypullto45degrees,making
sureyouareeitherdirectlyintothewind,ordirectlydownwind.
Usingfullailerondeflection,rolltotheright.Iftheaircraft(what
Icall)walkstotheright,thenyouhavetoomuchdowntravel
onyourailerons.Ifyourolltotherightandthemodel“walks”
totheleft,youhavetoomuchuptravelinyourailerons.Repeat
thisprocesstotheleftaswelluntilyouaresatisfiedyourmodel
istrackingtrueintherollaxis.Likewiththethrustangles,don’t
expectyourmodeltocontinuetorollfor5000’onastring—it
justcan’tbedone.Asperpreviousrecommendations,goforthe
majoritysituation.Withthecorrectdifferentialonyourmodel,
youwillbeamazedhoweasyitistodohesitationsonlines.
Programmable Mixing
Youwillnoticethissubjectisthelastinthesequencebutfor
many,it’sthefirst—manypeoplegostraighttothissection
first.Mymodelhas5%mixonrudder.Igetphonecallsall

itonlyhas8%Aileronmixand4%knife-edgemixing.BoyI
think,theysuregottothedetailsoftrimmingtheirmodelfaster
thanIcan.ThepointIliketomakethroughoutthisarticleis
tosticktothecorrectsequence.Knowthatonlyafterperhaps
10–15,perhaps20flights,arewegoingtoworkonthemixing
tofinetuneourmodel.
WhatIwouldliketodoistobreakupthisProgrammableMix
sectioninto2sections.Thefirstisthedownline,torqueoffset
orthrottleoffsetmixingandsecond,thetraditionalrudder
elevator/aileronmixing.Mostpeoplehaveafairlygood
understandungofthelatter,rudertoelev/aileronbutnotmany
areusingThrottleoffsetmixing.SomeIhaveseen,butonly
inthepitchcompensation.WhatIwouldhopeyouallpay
attentiontoiswhatyourmodelisdoingonadownline,or
atreducedthrottle(Idle)intherollorYawaxis.It’sboththese
areasIseepeoplestruggle.Oneofthebenefitsofjudgingour
eventsisyouseealotofstrangetrimsituations.Remembering
backattheNationals,Icanclearlyremembermodelsrolling
ondownlines,andyawingoffaxiscausingsomestrange-
lookingdownlinerolls.It’salmostimpossibletohaveperfect
triminrollatallspeeds.Allyoucanhopeforistomixoutsome
compensationtohelpreduceyourworkload.BoththeYawand
Rollaxis,inmostcaseshaveabiggeraffectinyourmodeltrack
ondownlinesthananyothersituation.Imaginewhattheeffects
ofa5degreeerroroneverydownlinewouldmean.Over
thelengthofthebox(Yes,Ithinkweneedaboxtoflyin)you
candriftinoroutbyasmuchas150’andthesameapplies
totheyawaxis.Evernoticedhowharditistogetyourwings
levelwhenapproachingapullcornerwithlittletime.Withyour
modelrollingandyawingatdifferentspeeds,youwillnever
beconsistent.Itishardenoughtobeabsolutelysurethatyour
wingsarelevel,letalonechaseanout-of-trimsituation.
