Sequencing
ManyofthetrimmingarticlesIhaveseenovertheyears
incorporatesomekindofchartorgraphsayingdothisandthis
happensandsoon.Myconceptofsequencingyourtrimming
issimple.Ifyougetyourtrimmingoutofsequenceyouwillend
upchasingyourtail.Aswithmostthingsinthisuniverse,for
everycausethereisaneffect,andthesameappliestotrimming
amodelaircraft.SomanytimesIseepeopletestflyingthere
nowaerobaticcreation,flipthethingonitssideandseewhat
kindofknife-edgemixingitmayneed.Thrust,CenterofGravity,
wingbalancingandbasicflightcontroltrimcanallaffectknife
tracking.
Ican’tmakethispointmoreloudandclear—itisveryimportant
totrimyourmodelinthecorrectsequencetomakesureeach
adjustmenthasnoeffectonthepreviousadjustment.
YouwillseeIhavebrokeneachelementdown,andthereis
anintentionalorderinwhichIrecommendtotrimamodel.
Modelbalance,CenterofGravityisnumber1,differential,
knifeedgeflight,downlinetrackingwillallbeaffectedbythe
CenterofGravity.Nextisdynamicbalancing,knownas“wing
tipweight.”Thencomesthrustangles,ailerondifferential,and
finallyprogrammablemixing,knife-edgetracking,rollcoupling,
downlinetrack.Finallyifyouchangeyourpropeller,your
wholetrimsetupwillchange.
Balance
OK,howdoIknowwhatisthecorrectCGformymodel.If
indoubt,readtheinstructions.Yep,chancesaresomebody
fromtheTOCorsimilarhasdesignedyouraircraftandhas
determinedovermanyflights,wheretheCenterofGravity
shouldbe.Forprecisionflyingforwardisbetter,but…too
farforwardcanbeaproblem.Icannotputinwritingwhatis
thebestfeelforeachpilot,otherthanitisafeelthing.Ican,
however,giveyousomesymptomsoftoofarbackandtoofar
forward,plussomesimpletestsIdotocheck.
OneofmyfavoritewaystodeterminethecorrectCenterof
Gravityisspinentries.ForprecisionflyingIwouldexpectyouto
berunningbetween12–15degreesofelevatorthrow.Ifyoufeel
youneedmorethanthis,checkyourexponential—itmaybetoo
high.Justasastartingpoint,35%expoiswhatIcallalinear
feel.WhatIliketohavewithmyexpoiswhenathalfstick,Iget
about50%ofthereactionoffullstick,around35–40%expo
givesyouthiswithmodestcontroldeflections.Ok,ifthatdidn’t
makesense:IfIhavemystickatfulltravel,myaircraftwillroll
around360–400degreespersecond,aboutrightforprecision.
NowwhenIonlymovemystickhalfway,Ishouldbelookingfor
180–200degreespersecond.Makesense?
Ifwhenenteringaspin,yourmodelmushes,kindofslidesinto
thespinwithnorealstallvisible,youmaybetoofarforward.
Anothersignofforwardisexcessivedownelevatorneeded
forinvertedflight.Thisisnotalwaysthereasonbutisasign.
RearCenterofGravityisprobablyeasiertoseeformostpilots.
Modelissensitiveinpitch,unpredictablearoundthestall,climbs
whenonaninverted45degreelinearesomeIhavenoticed.
CenterofGravityismainlyaboutfeel,eachpersonwillhave
theirpreferences,eachaircraftwillhaveitspreferences.Be
patient,spendsometimeonthisone,it’simportantyouare
happywithyourCenterofGravity.Iwouldrecommendatleast
10–15flightsbeforemakingthecommitmenttowhereitneeds
tobeifit’sanewmodel.
