Dynamic Balance
Ok,wearehappywithourCenterofGravity,sothenextthing
isdynamicbalance.Thisisreallyonlyrelevantwithwingtip
weight,mostotheraxesonamodelaircraftarenotaffectedtoo
muchbythedynamiceffectsofhighGforceloads.Havingsaid
that,yourwingsare.Justbecausetheybothweighthesame,
anddon’tcarryanyailerontrimdoesn’tmeanyoucan’thave
awingweightproblem.Ihaveseenamyriadofwaystotest
forwingweighttrim—loops,pullingtovertical,andsoon.My
suggestionistothinkaboutthesequencingargument.Ifyoudo
loops,orpulltoaverticalupline,theenginethrustcanhave
aneffect,yetwehaven’tgottotrimourthrustanglesyet.Think
aboutit,whatcouldyoudotocheckyourwingtipweightin
flightthatwillnotbeaffectedbythrust.WhatIdoisputthe
modelintoaverticaldive(minimumof3–4seconds)andpulla
hardcorneratthebottom.Nomatterwhereyourwingsarein
roll,whenyoupulltolevel,thewingsmustbelevel.Checkthis
conceptwithyourstickplane.Itreallydoesn’tmatterwhereyour
wingsare,asyoupulltohorizontalflightyourwingsmustbe
level.Ifyouattempttopullahardverticalfromhorizontal,you
mustbeabsolutelysureyourwingsareperfectlylevel.Idon’t
knowaboutyouguys,butIamnotthatgood.Ifyougofrom
verticaltohorizontal,notonlywilltheenginethrusthaveno
effectbutyourwingscanbeanywhereasyouareonavertical
downline.Nowwhenyoupullthecorner,theaircraftmaybe
pointinginadifferentdirectionthanyouplanned,butthatisok,
aslongasthewingsarelevel.WhenIwastoldthiswingweight
checkingprocedureyearsago,itmadesomuchsense.The
onlythingIwouldrecommendyoupayattentiontoismaking
sureyouonlyuseelevatorthroughthecorner.Don’tbequick
tomakeadecision.Haveafriendobservetheproceedings,do
manypullouts,andmakeabsolutelysurebeforeyoumoveon
tothenextstepoftrimming.
Thrust Angles
OK,guys,it’stimetoputasideaestheticsandgetthatthrust
correct.Isureseealotofspinnersperfectlyliningupthese
days.Oneofthebiggestdeterrentstoadjustingforthecorrect
thrustanglesisthespinnerwon’tlineupanymore.That’strue.
Onceagain,whenbuildingyourmodel,payattentiontothe
instructions,chancesaresomebodyhasfigureditoutpretty
close.WhatIliketodo,orusedtodo,istestflythemodel
beforeIpaintthecowl.OnceIamhappywiththrust,Ican
maketheappropriatecosmeticchangestocompletethemodel
beforepainting.Settingupthecorrectthrustanglesisfairly
simple.Well,it’ssimpletoidentify,hardertoadjust.
Rightthrust.Nowweknowourwingtipweightiscorrect,we
shouldbeabletoconfidentlyperformsomeaccuratevertical
uplines.Numberoneissuewiththisismakingsureyourwings
arelevel.Don’tguess,beabsolutelysureyourwingsarelevel
beforepullingtoavertical.Ihaveseenpeopleaddunnecessary
rightthrustastheywerenotlevelwhenpullingcorners,leaving
aninsidewingdown(normalhumanbehavior)andthe
modelwouldleantotheleft.WhatIliketodoistoflydirectly
overhead,intothewind,whereIcanclearlyseemywings,then
pulltoaverticalupline.Ok,upwego,first100’isgood,next
hundredfeetisgood,movingthrough500’,stilltrackingwell,
upover1000’now,stillstraight,comingupon10,000,arrrrrh,
Iseeitdriftingtotheleftalittle.Ok,Ok,Iambeingsarcastic,
butIhopeyouseemypoint.MostverticaluplinesinpatternsI
haveflownneverexceed1000’,wellsomedobutit’srare.You
willnevergetyourthrustperfectupto10,000feet.Ifyou're
workingatit,bestyoucanhopeforisaround1000orsofeet.
Speedwillhaveahugeeffectofyourthrustangleonavertical
upline.Entryspeed,comparedtounderloadafterclimbingto
100'willbeasmuchas30–40mphslower.Nowagreatlittle
tipIlearnedformakingtheadjustments.
