axisfirst,youcandothis2waysandbothworkwell.Infact,I
wouldsuggestyoutrybothtogetthebestinput.
Version1istoclimbtoahighaltitude,simulatingatypicaltop
oftheboxaltitudeandflydirectlyoveryourheadandintothe
wind.About50–100feetoutfromyourself,pushdown.
Youarenowlookingattheplanviewofthemodel.Watch
carefullytoseeifthemodelisrollingonthedownline.Most
modelswillrollslightlytotheright.Personally,Ihavenever
hadamodelthathasn’tneededalittleleftaileronmixonlow
throttle.I’mnotsayingitcan’thappenbutIpersonallyhaven’t
seenit.ThesecondwaytocheckforthrottleAileronmixisto
flyalongatlevelflight,mediumheightandreducethethrottle.
Watchcarefullyandseeifyourmodelisrolling,chancesareit
will.Arrr,everwonderedwhyyoualwayshavetoleanalittle
leftaileronenteringspins,orwhyyourmodelalwaysfallsone
way,perhapsit’sbecauseyourlowpowertrimisnotcorrect.
Ok,thesecondProgrammableMixisthethrottle-to-rudder
mix.Samedeal,it’shardtogetyourmodeltotrackcorrectlyin
theyawaxisatallspeeds,youronlyhopeistoapplyasmall
amountof"left"rudderonlowthrottle.Tocheckforthis,use
thesametechniqueasthethrottle-to-aileron:flyaboveyourself,
directlyintothewindandpushdowninfrontofyourselfand
watchcarefully.Youwillbeamazed,especiallyatthestartof
thedownline.Ifyouhaven’tgotanythrottleoffsettorudder,
youaremostlikelyflyingaroundtheproblem,andwhereIfind
itmostchallengingisinfigure9’sandverticalandhorizontal
8’s.Anytimeyouareusingelevatorandareoffontheyaw
axis,it’sabadhairday.Icanhearallyouguysthinking,yes
it’strue.Yourmodelperhapscouldneedalittleruddermixon
lowthrottle.Giveitatry,youwillbeamazed.Iknowofsome
fairlyexperiencedmodelersthatusethesametheorybutreverse
wherethemixis.Theyuselittletonorightthrustontheengine
buthaverightruddermixedonfullthrottle.Thatworkswell,or
soI’vebeentold,butIhaven’ttrieditmyself.Onethingyou
maywanttoexperimentwithinboththesescenariosiswhere
themixisactivated.Iliketohavethestickoffsetat
leastabovehalfandletitprogressfromthere.Itseemstobe
thebestbalance,plusIamnotgettingasuddenmixinput;it
progressesmoreorlesswiththespeedofthemodel.Thiswill
varyfrommodeltomodelbuttrytokeepthemixactivationwell
aboveanidlesetting.
Hopefullyyouhavenoticedwhenworkingthroughthetrim
sequencehoweachtrimadjustmenthascomplementedthenext
stage.RudderAileronMix.Inmostcasesonlyrequiresalinear
ProgrammableMix.WhatImeanbylinearProgrammableMix
isthatyoudon’tneedaprogressivevaluetothemix.(i.eLess
atthestart,moreattheendandthemixwillbelinear.)Most
moderndesigns,withtheexceptionofBi-planes,arerealclose
andonlyrequireasmallamountofRudderAileronMix.It’s
fairlyeasytoidentify.Someliketoputtheirmodelonknife-
edge,butIliketojustdoflatturns,simulatingrollingturninputs.
Remember,playthenumbers,rollingturnsrequiremoreprecise
mixingthansustainedknife-edgeflight.Infact,youdon’tdo
muchflyingonyoursideatall,butyousuredoalotofrolling
turns.So,Iliketodotheflatturnthing.Doingasimpleinside
rudderturntotheleft,usingleftrudder,themodelshouldjust
yaw,withnorolleffect.Iftheplanerollstotheleft,thenyou
needtomix2–5%rightailerontoleftrudder.MyCapisalittle
uniqueasithasadverseroll.WhenIapplyleftrudder,the
modelrollsright,soIneedleftaileronmixedwithleftrudder.
Repeattheprocesswithrightrudder.NowwhatIwantyouto
doisvarythespeedinwhichyoudoyourflatturns.Ifyoufind
asyouincreaseyourspeedthemixbecomestoomuch,you
couldbegettingsurfaceblowback.Man,sorrytokeepharping
aboutthisbutitisimportant.Withinsufficientrudderpower,
whenyouapplyaProgrammableMixforroll,orpitchforthat
matter,themixwillbecometoomuchvalueastherudderthrow
reducesduetoaerodynamicpressure.Iseeafewlightsgoing
offagain.Couldthisbewhyyouhaveyourmixperfectforknife
edge,butyouchaseyouraircraftalloverdoingrollingcircles?
