slitorientationallowsareflection-freeexaminationwithcontactglasses(fundus
andgonioscopy)andmagnifyingglasses.

Turning one of the two knobs on the right and left allows you to close the dia-
phragms to the pre-set aperture during observation.

5.7 Fixation star

Turning the diaphragm disc as far as it will go to the left switches on
thefixationstarandthesymbol"S"appearsinthewindow.Thisstaris
projected onto the fundus at the back of the eye in certain examinations
and is visible to the patient at the same time, who is asked to focus on
the hole in the center of the star. This allows the examiner to see where
the patient's vision is most focused.

Atypicalapplicationofthefixationstarisduringlasertreatmentsclose
to the macula. Similarly, it is also possible to identify microstrabismus
withtheprojectionofthefixationstar.Thefixationstarisusuallyused
witharedremovalfilter.
