TheoutputhasacommonNegative(-)
terminaland3Positiveterminalsfor
chargingupto3independentbanksof
batteries.EachPositiveconnectorhasit's
owninternalisolatingdiodewhichworks
asabatteryisolator.Ifmorethanonebank
ofbatteriesisconnected,thesewillbe
charged at the same time as long as the
ACpowerisavailabletothecharger(the
maximumchargingcurrentof15Aof
SEC-1215UL/SEC-2415ULand30Aof
SEC-1230ULwillbesharedamongthe
connectedbanksofthebatteriesdepend-
ingupontheirdischargedstates).Incase
theACpowerfailsorifthereisnooutput
fromthecharger,theisolatingdiodeswill
preventcharging/dischargingamongthe
batteriesconnectedtothebanks.
Theabovearrangementworksasabattery
isolatorandcandividethechargingcur-
rentintoamaximumof3isolatedbranches
andallowscurrentflowineachbranchin
onedirectiononly.Ifmorethanonebat-
terysystemsarebeingusedindependently,
thesystembatterieswilldischargeto
differentlevels.Ifsystembatteriesarecon-
nectedinparalleltochargefromasingle
charger,aweakoradeadbatterywilldrain
thechargefromthestrongbattery.Such
situationoccursinRVs,boatsandother
vehicleswhere2separatebatterysystems
areused–starterbatteryforstartingand
runningtheengineandtheotherauxiliary
/housebatterysystemforrunningauxiliary
deviceslikeinverters,refrigerators,car
stereosetc.Here,thestarterbatteryshould
beconnectedtoonebankandtheauxiliary
/housebatterytothesecondbank.Fig.5.1
showsthisconnection.
Inasinglebatterybank,twoormore
batteries may be connected in parallel to
increasetheirAHcapacity.Thesewillbe
discharged and charged as a single battery
bank.Inthiscase,theparalleledbankof
multiple batteries is to be considered as
asinglebankandconnectedtoanyone
ofthe3banksofthechargerasshownin
Fig.5.2forbankof4batteries.Forproper
chargingofallthebatteries,pleaseensure
thatthePositivewire“A”fromthecharger
isconnectedtothePositiveterminalofthe
firstbattery(Battery1)andtheNegative
wire“B”isconnectedtotheNegative
terminalofthelastbattery(Battery4).This
willensurethefollowing:
• Resistanceoftheinterconnectingcables
willbebalancedandtheindividualbat-
terieswillseethesameseriesresistance
• Alltheindividualbatterieswillbe
charged at the same charging current
andthuswillbechargedtothesame
stateofcharge
• Noneofthebatterieswillseeanover-
charge condition
Whenconnectingasinglebatteryorother
singleDCload,itcanbeconnectedtothe
commonNegativeandanyoneofthe3
PositiveterminalsasinFig.5.2.
oPeRAtion
Whenthechargerisswitchedon,the
red LeD lights up indicating that output
voltageisavailable.Whenthebatteries
arebeingchargedorwhenthecharger
issupplyingotherDCload,thecurrent
fedbythechargerwillbeindicatedby
theammeter.
Whenthebatteriesaredischarged,they
willdrawchargingcurrentproportional
to their discharged condition (up to a
maximumcurrentratingofthecharger)
andthiscurrentdrawwillbeshownby
