Adjusting the Transmission
Drive Belt Tension
Service Interval: Before each use or daily—Check the
transmission drive belt for squealing.
If the transmission drive belt squeals during operation
(i.e., when you shift from neutral to forward or reverse),
tighten the belt as follows:
1. Stop the machine on a level surface, place the
traction control lever in neutral, stop the engine,
disconnect the spark plug wire, and raise the cutting
blades to the highest position.
2. Remove the 3 bolts, lock washers, and 2 spacers
securing the belt cover to the left side of the machine
and remove the cover.
3. Check the tension of the transmission drive belt. It
should not flex more than a 1/2 inch (12 mm) with
moderate finger pressure applied to the span just
above the machine frame.

4. To tighten the belt, loosen the four mounting
nuts/bolts securing the pulley carriage to the frame
and move the carriage to the left, tightening the belt,
then secure the four mounting nuts and bolts.
If you cannot attain the necessary tension because
the carriage is flush with the side of the frame,
complete the following to lower the carriage slightly:
A. Loosen the nuts/bolts securing the carriage.
B. Slide four C-washers over the mounting bolts
between the pulley carriage and the frame.
