C. Negative Pressure
Negative pressure results from the imbalance of air avail-
ablefortheappliancetooperateproperly.Itcanbestrongest
inlowerlevelsofthehouse.
Causesinclude:
• Exhaustfans(kitchen,bath,etc.)
• Rangehoods
• Combustionairrequirementsforfurnaces,waterheaters
andothercombustionappliances
• Clothesdryers
• Locationofreturn-airventstofurnaceorairconditioning
• ImbalancesoftheHVACairhandlingsystem
• Upperlevelairleakssuchas:
- Recessed lighting
- Attic hatch
- Duct leaks
Tominimizetheeffectsofnegativeairpressure:
• Installtheoutsideairkitwiththeintakefacingprevailing
winds during the heating season
• Ensureadequateoutdoorairforallcombustionappliances
andexhaustequipment
• Ensurefurnaceandairconditioningreturnventsarenot
locatedintheimmediatevicinityoftheappliance
• Avoid installing the appliance near doors, walkways or
small isolated spaces
• Recessedlightingshouldbea“sealedcan”design
• Attichatchesweatherstrippedorsealed
• Atticmountedductworkandairhandlerjointsandseams
taped or sealed
D. Draft
Draftisthepressuredifferenceneededtoventanappli-
ance successfully. When an appliance is drafting suc-
cessfully,allcombustionbyproductsareexitingthehome
through the chimney.
Installthroughthewarmairspaceenclosedbythebuild-
ingenvelope.Thishelpstoproducemoredraft,especially
duringlightinganddie-downofthefire.
Considerationsforsuccessfuldraftinclude:
• Preventingnegativepressure
• Locationofapplianceandchimney

E. Chimney and Exhaust Connection

Chimney & Connector: Use 3 or 4 inch (76-102mm)
diametertype“L”or“PL”ventingsystem.Itcanbevented
verticallyorhorizontally.
2.
Mobile Home: ApprovedforallListedpelletvent.Ifusing
the3inch(76mm)verticalTopVentAdapterKitorthe3
to6inch(76-152mm)TopVentOffsetAdapter,useListed
doublewallflueconnector.AQuadra-FireOutsideAirKit
(OAK-3)mustbeusedwithmanufacturedhomeinstalla-
tions.

Residential: The3inch(76mm)verticalTopVentAdapter
Kitandthe3to6inch(76-152mm)TopVentOffsetAdapter
aretestedtouse24gaugesinglewallflueconnectoror
ListeddoublewallflueconnectortoClassAListedmetal
chimneys, or masonry chimneys meeting International
Residential Code standards for solid fuel appliances.

INSTALL VENT AT CLEARANCES SPECIFIED BY THE
VENT MANUFACTURER.
5. Secureexhaustventingsystemtotheappliancewithat
least3screws.Alsosecureallconnectorpipejointswith
atleast3screwsthrougheachjoint.
6. DONOTINSTALLAFLUEDAMPERINTHEEXHAUST
VENTINGSYSTEMOFTHISUNIT.
7. DONOTCONNECTTHISUNITTOACHIMNEYFLUE
SERVINGANOTHERAPPLIANCE.
NOTE: All pipe must be welded seam pipe whenever
possible. Seal pipe joints with high temperature silicone
(500°F [260°C] minimum rated only).
