Subwoofer Settings:
You only have the flexibility to choose how bass information is distributed to your speakers if you have large
left/right front speakers and a subwoofer as part of your home theatre speaker system. Options include:
• ‘No’
All bass is routed to ‘Large’ L/R Front and Surround speakers, including bass from
speakers set to ‘Small’ plus bass from the ‘.1’ LFE (Low Frequency Effects) channel.
• ‘Yes’
When L/R Fronts are set to ‘Large’, their bass will stay with the L/R Fronts and not go to the
subwoofer. In the ‘Yes’ setting, bass from speakers set to ‘Small’ will go to the subwoofer
along with bass from the ‘.1’ LFE channel. This setting is preferred by THX.
• ‘Super’ Copies bass from speakers set to ‘Large’, extracts bass from speakers set to ‘Small’, and
together with the LFE channel, routes this combined bass signal to the Subwoofer and
‘Large’ L/R Front and Surround speakers simultaneously.
To decide which setting is best for your room, once you have positioned all of your speakers, choose the
option which gives you the most solid sounding bass.
‘None’ Setting for Center, Surrounds, or Rears:
•
If CENTER is set to ‘None’, the center channel information is directed to the L/R Fronts (this is also
known as a Phantom center channel).
•
If SURROUNDS are set to ‘None’, the L-Surround channel information is directed to the L-Front
channel, and the R-Surround channel to the R-Front channel (except in Dolby Pro Logic mode).
•
If REARS are set to ‘None’, the matrix-encoded Rear channel information of Surround EX DVDs
remains in the Surround channels without being extracted, therefore no information is lost in the
absence of Rear speakers.
Note: If you are currently using a speaker system that has 5.1 speakers (or less), the speakers at the
back of the room should be connected using the SURROUNDS channel, and REARS should be set
to ‘None’ to properly configure your system (see section 2.3).
Crossover Frequency:
The Crossover Frequency sets the low frequency limit that will be directed to any speaker set to ‘Small’, and
the upper frequency limit that will be directed to the subwoofer.
Using the
"# buttons, choose a frequency within the 25 Hz - 160 Hz range that approximates the low
frequency capability of the speakers in your system. Doing so will provide the best blend between the
subwoofer and the other speakers in your system. If you are using THX certified speakers, this should be set
to 80Hz. Since bass is most dependent on your specific room acoustics, we recommend some
experimentation with subwoofer placement and this adjustment to achieve best results.
Advanced Settings:
Advanced Settings offer more options for setting the bass management of your system. When Advanced
Settings is ‘Off’, item ‘f. CROSSOVER FREQUENCY’ is in use. When it is ‘On’, menu ‘4.h ADVANCED SETTINGS
SETUP’ is used – these settings can be adjusted in the Advanced Settings Setup submenu.
Advanced Settings Setup – Crossover Frequency:
Advanced Settings let you tailor Crossover Frequency settings more precisely. Provided they are set to
‘Small’, each speaker type can be set to a Crossover Frequency that best suits their specific low frequency
characteristics. Even set large speakers (that can handle extended bass) to ‘Small’ because you can set the
Crossover Frequency to a low setting, and do so separately for the crossover settings of other speakers.
If room acoustics cause cancellation in the crossover region, sound can be improved by overlapping the
Subwoofer setting with the settings of other speakers, for instance setting L/R FRONTS XOVER to 80 Hz while
setting SUBWOOFER XOVER to 100 Hz. On the other hand, if there is a bass peak in the crossover region, you
can spread the settings, for instance setting L/R FRONTS XOVER to 100 Hz and SUBWOOFER XOVER to 80 Hz.
