Every time the switch sees a source address that it
does not have in its switch database (an unknown
address), it learns what port the device is on. When
the switch database is full, no new addresses are
learnt. The switch regularly removes unused learnt
addresses from the switch database if they have not
been used over a specific length of time (known as
the
ageing time
). Using the web interface, you can
make address entries permanent so that they are not
removed by the ageing process.
It is a good idea to have permanent address entries
for certain pieces of network equipment that are
primarily receivers of traffic, for example printers and
fax servers.
The fields on the Switch Database box are:
Port Selection Filter
All Ports / Port 1 / Port 2 /
Port 3 / Port 4 / Port 5
Specify the port that the device with the MAC
address is on. Choose a specific port if you want to
perform an action on an address for that port, or
choose
All Ports
.
Enter MAC Address
Specify the MAC address of
the device. If you want to search for an address, you
can enter part of the address.
Select Action Type
Display All / Insert / Delete /
Search
Specify the operation you want to perform.
The fields on the Display Database Entries box are:
Port
The port that the device with the MAC address
is on.
MAC Address
The MAC address of the device.
Status
Shows whether the address was learnt or
made permanent.
Displaying, Inserting, Deleting and Searching
for MAC addresses
To display all of the learnt and permanent addresses
in the switch database, choose
Display All
as the
action type and click
Do Action
. The Display
Database Entries box is updated to display all of the
entries in the switch database.
To insert a permanent entry into the switch database,
select the specific port the device is on and enter the
device’s MAC address, then choose
Insert
as the
action type and click
Do Action
.
