This chapter describes how to use the Command Line
Interface (CLI). The CLI is a quick and simple interface
that is built into your switch, which allows you to
enter various IP address settings, and reset and
initialize the switch.
Using the web interface, you can change all of the
parameters that the CLI allows you to change. You
would normally use the CLI to set up the switch
quickly with IP address information, for management
over the network.
Simple help is provided with each command in the
CLI. If you have not used the switch’s CLI before, read
through this chapter before logging on, so you are
familiar with how it works.
Before you can manage with the CLI, you must make
a management connection to the switch, refer to
“Making a Management Connection to Your Switch”
Using a Terminal Emulator
If you do not have a terminal, you can use a terminal
emulator to access the switch’s CLI over a serial link
(through the console port). Microsoft Windows
comes with a suitable terminal emulator:
■
Windows
®
‘95 and Windows NT (version 4 or
later) have a program called ‘HyperTerminal’.
■
Other versions of Windows have a program called
‘Terminal’.
For other types of management stations and
operating systems, refer to the documentation that
accompanies your application for information on how
to use it. You need to set the data bits (character size)
to ‘8’, stop bit to ‘1’ and parity to ‘none’ on your
management station for the connection to work.
The switch automatically detects the baud rate of the
management station and adjusts its own baud rate
to match, providing that the baud rate of the
management station is no more than 19200.
